Life as we know it in Los Angeles has certainly changed. Stay at home orders, social distancing, business and park closures – these are all impacting the way that L.A. moves. People are being advised to stay home unless they have “essential” business, such as work in an essential occupation or essential errands, such as grocery shopping.
For these essential tasks, L.A. residents often rely on public transit. But is public transit safe right now? The Metro is working hard to make public transit as safe as possible during the COVID-19 crisis. Buses have limited capacity and riders must use the rear doors to board (unless they require the wheelchair accessible ramp). Some routes have been suspended or schedules altered in order to maintain service without significant interruptions.
Of course, we each must do our part to follow guidelines and practice good hygiene.
Tips for Essential Workers Using Public Transit
Here are some tips on how to stay safe when using public transit during the COVID-19 crisis:
· Only travel when absolutely necessary, such as to and from work.
· Maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others.
· Wear a cloth face covering when using public transit.
· Use hand sanitizer after touching railings, handles, turnstiles or handling money.
· If you cough or sneeze, use your elbow to cover your face.
· Regularly sanitize your wallet, cell phone and debit or credit cards.
· Don’t leave trash behind on buses or trains.
The Metro is also taking steps to keep facilities, buses and trains clean. When you are using public transit, be mindful of those who clean and maintain the facilities. Do your part to help keep L.A.’s public transit in good working order.
